Multi-Colour Blockwork Sphere Acrylic Sculpture (50cm) by Giant Sculptures, stacked rectangular blocks in blue, red, orange, yellow and green bands forming a sphere, on a plain white background.
Multi-Colour Blockwork Sphere Acrylic Sculpture - 50cm $3,39800
Description

An acrylic sculpture of a sphere built entirely from rectangular blocks laid in horizontal courses, each course stepped in or out from the one below to approximate the curve. The silhouette is therefore a staircase and the overall profile is a circle, and which of those you see depends on how far away you are. The courses are coloured in bands: blue across the crown, then a wide belt of red, then orange, then yellow, then green, and blue again at the foot. Every block is translucent, so the bands show through one another where the sphere is thin at the top and bottom.

A Circle Built Out of Squares

Making a sphere out of courses of rectangles means every course is a different problem. The number of blocks in a course, their width and how far the course steps in from its neighbour all change as the diameter changes, so the courses have to be drawn as one set, and a course one block out would break the outline at once. The crown and the foot are the difficult ends: there the diameter changes fastest, so the steps are largest and the eye is most likely to catch a flat spot. The colour boundaries are set at course lines rather than within a course, which sounds obvious and constrains the design considerably, since a band can only be as wide as a whole number of courses.

At 50cm, a sphere of saturated colour is a strong thing to put in a room and it wants to be the only strong thing there. On a plain low table, an island, a broad console or the floor of a bright corner it works well; on a patterned rug beside a coloured sofa it competes and loses. It reads from a distance, so it suits a large room or the far end of an open one better than a tight space where you only ever see it close and read the blocks rather than the sphere. Daylight is kindest to the colours. Under a warm lamp the green and blue courses go muddy while the reds and oranges gain.

Courses, Colour and Lifting It

Set aside 3–4 weeks for a standard piece and 5–6 weeks for a bespoke commission. The colour sequence is drawn per piece, so a single-colour sphere, a two-tone division or a graded run from one end of the spectrum to the other are all available, and the block size can be coarsened for a blunter staircase or refined until the sphere reads almost smooth. Diameters run from something that sits in a hand up to a piece that needs a room of its own. A part-sphere is made for a piece intended to sit against a wall. It is lifted from underneath with both hands rather than gripped round its middle by the edges of the courses. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Built of stepped courses banded blue, red, orange, yellow and green, this sphere rounds out our indoor sculptures, our contemporary and modern sculptures and our acrylic sculptures.

Shipping & Returns

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For all orders delivered worldwide, all customs duties, import taxes, and applicable local clearance fees are fully included in the purchase price. We manage and settle these charges on your behalf, ensuring you will not incur any additional fees upon arrival.

Please note that this policy excludes shipments delivered to Switzerland, as well as any individual orders where an exclusion is explicitly stated prior to purchase; in such instances, local customs charges and import taxes remain the responsibility of the customer.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
