Description

Trunk curled back over its own head, an elephant stands beneath a tasselled headpiece. A beaded collar crosses the throat and the ears lie close to the head. A small saddle-cloth bears a foliate device, and rope-carved rings encircle each ankle. Beneath is a low pedestal with a pierced lattice band above a frieze of rosettes in a running border. Warm pink-buff sandstone, cream where the light catches its raised passages, the grain fine and matte and faintly porous.

A Stone That Crushes Where Marble Chips

Sandstone is worked quite differently from marble, and the reason is what the material is: grains of sand held together by a natural cement, rather than a single crystalline mass. Strike it as hard as you would strike marble and it does not chip cleanly - it crushes, taking a shallow crater of loosened grains with it that no amount of rubbing will restore. So every blow is lighter and there are far more of them, the chisel is kept sharper because a dull edge bruises rather than cuts, and the finish comes from abrasive alone. The reward is that sandstone carries fine detail crisply, which is why the pierced lattice and the rosette frieze are possible at this scale.

Sandstone is the most openly weathering material in this range. It will darken, take lichen in its hollows and soften at its sharpest arrises over years outdoors, and all of that is the stone behaving properly rather than deteriorating - it is why old Indian carving looks the way it does. So it belongs outside and unsealed. What it does not want is standing water: an open-grained stone holds it, and held water plus frost is the one combination that does real harm. At 220cm the raised trunk goes well overhead, and the piece is composed for that. Ground that drains suits it best.

A Stone That Weathers Willingly

Twenty-four to twenty-six weeks. Sandstone is cut with lighter blows than marble, its grain crushing rather than chipping under a heavy hand. The pedestal is cut first and its rosette frieze set out with dividers, and the lattice band pierced right through afterwards - the slowest single operation on the piece. The animal is roughed standing above it, legs as columns, then body and the close-lying ears. The headpiece and its hanging tassel are cut next, the tassel undercut so it hangs clear. The trunk curled back over the head is the last and most exposed work. Neither the sandstone beast nor its pedestal carries a pin, a dowel or any filler. Near 6,214kg of sandstone, craned in two parts onto a poured concrete foundation. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Indian-carved beasts appear in animal sculptures, and weathering stone in outdoor sculptures.

Production Time

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
