Guardian Lion With a Dark Cap Plinth Marble - 200cm $31,63500
Description

A pair of Chinese guardian lions sit on two-tier plinths, one forepaw on a cub and the other on an embroidered ball. What sets these apart is the two-tone treatment: the cap slab above each plinth is a dark near-black stone, and the diagonal lattice of the triangular apron and its key-fret border are picked out dark against the pale plinth below. One lion is supplied; two orders give you the flanking arrangement.

Dark Cap Slabs Against Pale Plinths

Two tones on one piece means the dark work is done last and protected while it is done. The pale plinth is finished and sealed before the fret is blacked, because once the dark reaches a pale surface it does not come off a marble the way it comes off a granite. The cap slab is a separate stone bedded on top rather than a stained band, which is why the line between pale and dark is dead straight rather than feathered. The plinth itself is a white marble, and that is what makes the dark cap read as a line rather than as a shadow.

The dark caps give these lions a horizon line at plinth height, which reads well against a pale wall, gravel or a light paving and disappears against dark planting. Set them flanking a gate or a stair with something light behind. As a pair they want equal spacing either side; singly, a corner. Both plinths need beds at exactly the same level or the dark caps will not line up.

Two Tones, and Keeping Them Clean

Fifteen weeks. The pale plinths are cut, finished and sealed before any dark work begins, and the fret is blacked only then, because the sealer is what stops the dark bleeding into the marble. The cap slabs are cut and bedded separately. The figures are seated last, once the caps are down. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Around 4,668kg per piece across three parts, craned onto level beds.

Production Time

Every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
