Gate Drum Stone With an Elephant Marble - 120cm $15,30000
Description

A gate drum stone rises from a scrolled base, a small caparisoned elephant standing on its top. The drum is carved in relief on both faces with peonies, foliage and a long-tailed bird among the branches, and its base rolls forward into a volute at the foot. Even the finial elephant is caparisoned, its saddle-cloth and headpiece cut in miniature. The whole sits on a stepped plinth banded with scrolling friezes and a cloud-scroll apron. White marble, faint grey veining crossing the drum face and the plinth courses. One drum stone is what is priced; they are made to face in pairs.

Turning a Drum True on Both Faces

A drum stone is a disc, and a disc that is not truly circular announces itself from across a courtyard - the eye is far better at spotting an out-of-round circle than an out-of-square rectangle. So the drum is brought to shape before any ornament exists: scribed from a centre point, worked back to the line on both faces, and checked by rotating a template against the rim rather than by measuring across it, because a shape can measure right across several diameters and still not be round. Only when it holds true is the relief laid out on it, and the two faces are set out separately - they are different pictures, not one repeated.

This is a gateway fitting rather than a sculpture in the round, and it is composed for the job: a drum stone stands at the foot of a gate jamb, one either side, where it braces the post and stops a cart wheel. That is where it looks right - flanking an opening in a wall, a courtyard entrance, a pair of gate piers, the head of a drive. Standing alone in a garden it reads as a fragment of something missing. At 120cm the drum face sits at waist to chest height, where its relief can be read. The relief is cut for that height and rewards being walked past rather than viewed from a distance.

An Architectural Piece, Not a Statue

Twelve to fourteen weeks. Turning the drum true on both faces opens the work, before either relief field is laid out upon it. The scrolled base and its volute are cut from the same block as the drum, and the stepped plinth separately with its friezes and cloud-scroll apron. The two relief fields are then laid out on the drum faces and sunk, each set out on its own. The small elephant finial is carved last of the drum work, caparison and all, at a scale where the cloth is a few millimetres deep. Plinth and drum are bedded dry. Drum, scrolled base and plinth are free of pins and fillers, each bedded dry. Near 1,008kg for the one drum stone, gantry-set and bedded onto a prepared pad. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Architectural stonework sits apart from animal sculptures, and gateway pieces belong to garden statues.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
