Couchant Lion on a Tall Pedestal Marble Statue - 180cm $26,97700
Description

A lion lies couchant on a tall rectangular pedestal, its head turned outward and its forepaws set one over the other at the front edge of the cap. The mane is cut in long waves lifting back from the face, the ribs show through the flank, and the haunch and tail are laid along the cap. The pedestal has a projecting moulded cap and a stepped base, and carries most of the 180cm. The marble is white with grey veining, strong through the pedestal faces.

An Animal and a Pedestal, Cut as Courses

At 180cm this is not one block but a short stack, and the joints are part of the design rather than concealed by it. The stepped base, the shaft and the moulded cap are cut as separate courses and bedded one on another, each face dressed flat so the bed is even and the weight passes straight down through the middle of the course below. The cap projects beyond the shaft, which means it works partly as a cantilever, so it is cut from the deepest piece in the stack and its overhang is kept modest. The lion is worked from its own block and bedded on the cap last. Because the courses are separate, the veining is chosen course by course to run in the same direction through the whole pedestal.

A couchant lion on a pedestal is an entrance composition. At 180cm the animal sits above head height, which is where it is meant to be - it is carved to be looked up at, with the head turned out to face an arrival rather than to be studied close to. Gate piers, the ends of a balustrade, the head of a flight of steps, or either side of a drive entrance all suit it. It is designed to face another across an opening, and the two versions differ in the mouth: one closed, one open. White marble with grey veining reads clearly against brick and against dark hedging.

A Gate-Pier Height, and Ordering Two

Sixteen to eighteen weeks for a single lion and its pedestal. The courses are cut and dressed first, and the beds are worked flat and tested against each other before any carving starts, because a bed that rocks will not be fixed later by mortar. The mouldings on the cap and the stepped base are run next. The lion is then carved from a separate block, roughed couchant with the forepaws left thick where they overhang the front edge, and the mane separated afterwards, worked outward to inward. The head is turned late, once the body is finished and stable. Assembly is the final stage: the courses are bedded up in order and the lion set on the cap. Each piece is carved, finished and delivered as one lion with its own pedestal. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops. Around 3,403kg for one lion and its pedestal, craned course by course onto a concrete foundation.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of destination.

  • Sculptures under 50cm — shipped by air freight. Typical delivery 1–2 weeks after production is complete.
  • Sculptures 50cm and above — shipped by sea freight. Typical delivery 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

For larger sculptures where faster delivery is needed, air freight is available at additional cost — contact us before ordering for a quote.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

30-Day Returns

We accept 30-day returns on sculptures in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

To start a return, contact us within 30 days of receipt. Return shipping for change-of-mind returns is at the customer's cost.

Bespoke and custom-commissioned pieces are non-refundable once production has started, as they are made specifically to your specification.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
