Clear Backward-Glancing Dog on Resin Block - 29cm $1,88900
Description

This dog sits back on its haunches and turns its head right round over one shoulder, so the body faces one way and the face another. The turn is the whole composition: from the front you see the chest and no face, from the side the face and no chest, and the piece changes completely in a quarter turn. Gold leaf is caught through the colourless body, and a clear block dense with the same leaf carries it.

A Neck That Turns and Takes the Whole Piece With It

A turned neck is the passage that decides whether an animal this size works. From almost anywhere you stand, both faces of the neck are in view at once, so neither of them can be the back, and the muscle on the outside of the turn has to stretch while the inside gathers into folds. Those folds are what make the turn believable and they are also where a polish stops reaching: they are worked with shaped abrasives that follow the curve rather than flats that would cut across it, and the throat is finished before the head is brought to its final grade because the head blocks the tools once it is there. The ears are cut last, thin enough to read as ears and thick enough to survive being picked up.

Because it changes so much with the angle, this is a piece to put where people arrive from one side and leave from another: a hall shelf, the end of a run of cabinets, a desk seen from the doorway. Set it with the face turned towards the way in. It is small enough to be handled and it will be. On a dark surface the pale body separates cleanly; against a busy background the outline is lost and the gold does all the work.

What Can Be Changed on a Small Animal

Whether it is standard or bespoke sets the build: 3–4 weeks or 5–6. The direction of the turn is mirrored on request, so a facing pair can be made from this design alone. Leaf density runs from a few flakes to a heavy scatter, in gold, silver or copper, and the block can be made plain with the leaf held in the animal. The body takes an amber or a grey tint, or a frosted finish in place of the polish. The block can be tinted near black or cut in a pale stone instead of clear. Any scale is cut to order and the standing and head-down animals are made to match. It ships as one item, boxed and sleeved, and needs nothing doing to it on arrival. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A dog that turns to look behind it belongs with our animal sculptures; a neck twisted round over the haunch leads to our figurative sculptures, and gold flakes inside clear resin join our resin sculptures.

Shipping & Returns

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
