Description

A flat plate with angular edges stands on end, cut through by a single opening, with gold leaf caught in the body around it. Colourless with gold leaf suspended inside it, and the gold is the only colour anywhere on the piece. Two supports are supplied: a long black marble block, and under it a gilt plate set back from its edges.

Gold Leaf Held Inside a Thin Plate

Suspending leaf in a body works only within a narrow range of thickness: too little and the gold lies flat against one face, too much and it is lost in the middle. The plate's depth is enough for the flakes to sit at different levels and to be seen doing it from either side. A body of this thickness is why the leaf reads as suspended: there is just enough depth for the gold to sit at different levels and none for it to hide in. Polished on both faces and around the whole cut outline, with the gilt plate bright beneath it.

A desk or a bookshelf, positioned so that something can light it from behind. Behind it, something dark. Gold against a bright wall stops being gold. Backlight puts the leaf into the air; front light lays it down on the surface. The silhouette carries; the gold only sorts into leaf and fleck at a pace or so.

Changing the Gold, and Two Supports in One Crate

Allow 3–4 weeks for a standard piece and 5–6 weeks for a bespoke commission. Say the word and the amount of gold is changed, the opening is cut elsewhere, or the supports are made as one. Cut the opening elsewhere and the silhouette changes with it, since the outline and the hole are drawn against each other. Three parts in one crate, stacked in order where the piece will stand. One person at the block, never by the plate. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A clear plate holding gold leaf takes its place in our indoor sculptures; its cut outline is of a piece with our contemporary and modern sculptures, and the leaf held through its depth ties the piece to our resin sculptures.

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
