The frame and legs of this armchair are clear acrylic and the seat frame and foot rail are solid ash, so it is read as two materials meeting at right angles throughout. Three panels carry the work: the two ash arm panels and the pale back panel are cut right through with a squared fret, and at the centre of the back a scrolling flower is carved into a plain upright panel.
A fret cut right through a panel is only as good as its internal corners, and a squared fret is nothing but internal corners. Each one has to be cut square and then polished on a face you can barely reach, because on a clear panel an unpolished internal edge reads as a white line and the whole pattern turns into a drawing of itself. The scrolling flower at the centre is the opposite problem: all curve and no corner, and it has to be cut at the same depth as the fret around it or it floats. The ash keeps an open grain beneath a clear finish, so it stays unmistakably timber beside a body that declares nothing at all.
A fretted back and arms give this chair a formality that suits a study, a hall or the head of a dining table rather than a sofa group. Put light behind it and the openings themselves become the drawing; lit from the front they close up. The ash is the warm element and it is worth matching to a floor or a table rather than to the walls. Two of them flanking a console read as a set.
Figure the difference between standard and bespoke at 3–4 weeks against 5–6. Timber is chosen from a range and a darker stain or a limed finish is available where ash is too pale. The fret pattern can be opened out, closed in or replaced, and the central flower can be left off for a plain fret. A tint is offered in the acrylic. Seat height is set to your table. Each chair arrives assembled and is a two-person lift, the arms making an awkward carry for one. Where a set is ordered the timber comes from one board so the pieces match, and every fretted panel travels boxed on both faces. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.
A squared fret cut through ash and acrylic belongs with our indoor sculptures; a scrolling flower at the centre of the back leads to our art furniture, and seating with some ceremony to it joins our acrylic sculptures.

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.
Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.
Production time is separate from delivery time.
Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.
Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.
All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.
Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.
For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.
Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.
For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.
If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.
Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.
Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.
To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.
Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:
Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.
This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
If you have questions about shipping, customs, delivery timing, or anything else before you order, our team is here to help. Contact us via WhatsApp, email, or phone, and we'll respond within 24 hours.
