Blue Graded Cross-Lapped Panel Acrylic Bench, 120cm, by Giant Sculptures, with a clear slab top and two cross-lap panel supports, set against a plain white background.
Blue Graded Cross-Lapped Panel Acrylic Bench - 120cm $4,59000
Description

Two channels are worked across the upper face of this bench's single blue slab, set in from the ends and spaced so they answer the supports below. Each support is a pair of panels crossed at right angles and halved together, so the bench stands on two crosses rather than four legs. The blue is deepest through the slab and clears where the panels meet the floor.

Two Cross-Lap Channels Worked Into the Seat

Two crossed supports under one slab is a harder arrangement than four legs, because a cross concentrates the load along two lines instead of spreading it to corners and any twist in the slab shows up as a rock. The slab is therefore cast flat and left to stand before it is worked, and the channels are cut only once it has settled. Each cross is halved together with the housings cut to thickness and no tolerance to spare, then bonded and reworked so the faces run through the crossing. The channels in the seat are cut after the slab is finished and their floors are brought to the same polish as the face. The grade is laid in during the cast, which is why it carries through the panels as well as the slab.

A bench of this length goes where a run of seating is wanted without a back: along a hall, under a window, across the foot of a bed, or at a table where chairs would crowd. It is a seat rather than a step. The two crosses sit in from the ends, so both ends of the slab reach out clear and want to be left that way. Against a pale wall the graded blue reads strongest at the seat, which is where the piece is meant to be read from.

Channel Spacing, Colour Direction and Getting It In

Where the piece is standard the build is 3–4 weeks, and where it is bespoke 5–6. Channel spacing and count are set at order and the seat is offered plain. The grade can be turned to run from the floor up, taken through a green, a grey or an amber, or left out for a colourless bench. The crosses can be moved in or out along the slab, which changes how much of it reaches past them, and a third cross is available where the length is run out. Length and seat height are cut to order. Slab and crosses travel separately, the slab on edge in a crate, and two people set it on in place. Nothing is fixed down. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Two cross-lap channels answering the supports belong with our acrylic sculptures; panels crossed and halved under one slab lead to our geometric sculptures, and a backless seat along a hall joins our indoor sculptures.

Shipping & Returns

Almost every sculpture at Giant Sculptures is handmade to order, then shipped worldwide free of charge. Below is everything you need to know before you order, and what to expect after.

Production Time

Almost every sculpture is handmade to order by our artisans — we do not mass-produce.

  • Standard sculptures: approximately 3–4 weeks from order confirmation.
  • Bespoke commissions (custom sizes, finishes, or fully custom designs): approximately 5–6 weeks from design sign-off.

Production time is separate from delivery time.

Free Worldwide Shipping

Shipping is free worldwide on every sculpture, regardless of size or destination. Standard delivery is by sea freight, typically 6–8 weeks after production is complete.

Express air freight is available on request at additional cost, with delivery in up to 10 days. Ask us before placing your order, or straight after, and we will confirm the cost for your destination.

All sculptures ship in reinforced protective crating, fully insured to purchase value.

Delivery to Your Address

Delivery is to the door or curbside at your shipping address.

For larger sculptures shipped by sea freight, the carrier will contact you in advance to arrange a delivery window. Please ensure someone is available to accept the delivery and that the property has suitable access for the size of the piece.

Once the sculpture arrives, you are responsible for positioning it in its final display location. For larger or heavier pieces, we recommend arranging two people (family, friends, or a local moving service) to help with placement.

International Orders & Customs

For orders shipping outside the United Kingdom, any customs duties, import taxes, or local fees at your destination country are the responsibility of the customer. These charges are set by your local authority and are not included in our shipping cost.

If you have questions about customs for your specific country, contact us before ordering and we can advise on typical charges for your region.

Returns

Where an order qualifies, we accept returns within 14 days of receipt, in original condition and original packaging, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

Because our sculptures are made individually, most orders do not qualify. Returns do not apply to any item that is not held in stock, is made to order, or is custom or bespoke.

To check whether your order qualifies, contact us within 14 days of receipt. On a qualifying return, return shipping is at the customer's cost, a 25% restocking fee applies, and original shipping charges are not refunded.

Damage in Transit

Every sculpture ships fully insured. In the unlikely event of damage during transit:

  1. Report the damage within 48 hours of delivery.
  2. Provide clear photographs of both the damage and the packaging.
  3. We arrange collection and either replacement or full refund at no cost to you.

Lifetime Guarantee

Every sculpture carries a lifetime guarantee against finish defects under normal display conditions, subject to our Terms & Conditions.

This covers manufacturing defects, premature finish degradation, and structural failures under normal display. It does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, inappropriate environments (for example, an indoor-only sculpture placed outdoors), or modifications made after delivery.
