Brilliant white marble stag standing beneath a full spread of pierced antlers
Standing Stag White Marble Statue - 220cm $29,21100
Description

A stag stands head raised beneath a full spread of antlers, one hind leg set back. The rack is pierced between many of its tines, the neck carries a shaggy ruff, and the flank and haunch are modelled smooth with the short tail lifted. It stands on carved rocky ground which spreads to a shallow oval base. Brilliant white marble, unmarked, with no veining legible in animal, antlers or base.

How Much Stone a Rack of Antlers Can Carry

A full spread of antlers in marble is the least sensible thing anyone ever asks a carver for, and it is the reason this piece takes as long as it does. Every tine is a cantilever - stone held out into open air on a joint no thicker than the tine itself - and the openings bored between them are what make the rack read as antler rather than as a plate. The limit is not artistic but arithmetic: each tine can only be thinned until the section at its root will still carry the weight beyond it, and that calculation is done tine by tine, from the tips inward, because losing one at the root costs the whole rack. The openings are bored while the antlers are still oversized blocks, and everything after that is careful subtraction.

The rack is two-thirds of this animal's silhouette and all of its difficulty, so put it where the rack can be seen. At 220cm the antler tips go far above the eye and are read against the sky. Against sky, water or open lawn every bored opening reads as air and the antlers separate into individual tines; against trees, a hedge or a wall the same rack collapses into one grey mass and the work vanishes. So this is a piece for an eminence - the crest of a slope, an island bed, the end of a long view, a paddock rail. It is also, at 220cm and brilliant unmarked white, the most visible thing in this range from a distance, which is either the point or a reason to think twice.

Antlers Belong Against Sky

Twenty-six to twenty-eight weeks, and the antlers are most of it. Boring between the antler tines is the whole difficulty, and it decides how much stone the rack can carry. The oval base and rocky ground are dressed first, then the animal roughed standing on it with legs left as thick columns and the antlers as two solid blocks. Body, neck ruff and head follow. The rack is bored while still oversized and then worked down tine by tine from the tips inward, the section at each root checked as it goes. The legs are freed last. Nothing in stag, antlers or base is pinned or filled - the rack is cut from the block. Some 6,214kg all told, craned across in a single lift onto a poured concrete footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Antlered beasts stand among animal sculptures, and the tall ones within life size large statues.

Two large, black bear-shaped sculptures stand indoors near a window with a view of a yard. One sculpture is in the foreground with its back to the viewer, and the other faces forward, creating a mirrored effect. Trees and a chair are visible outside.
A shiny metallic bear sculpture stands on the corner of a modern buildings patio, mirrored by another similar black figure in the foreground. The area features minimalistic architecture with large glass windows.
