About Our Outdoor Sculptures
An outdoor sculpture has a harder job than an indoor one. It has to hold its own against sky, weather and open ground, work from every angle rather than one, and look better in ten years than it did on the day it arrived. That last requirement is what decides the material, and it rules out most of what is sold for gardens.
Just over half this collection is carved marble, with mirror-polished stainless steel making up most of the rest. Both are permanent outdoor materials for different reasons: marble weathers slowly and softens in tone, gathering the patina that makes classical statuary look right in a garden, while stainless steel does not corrode at all and stays bright, reflecting the sky and the planting around it.
The range splits between classical and contemporary. On the classical side there are figures, angels, portrait busts and animals in the European garden tradition; on the contemporary side polished abstract forms, geometric works and large-scale modern pieces. Browse the traditional end in garden statues and marble sculptures and statues, and the contemporary end in stainless steel sculptures.
Siting is most of the decision. A piece at the end of a sight line needs enough height to read at distance, which is why a third of the collection stands over 160cm, while a terrace or a courtyard suits something closer to eye level. Reflective work should be placed where it has something worth reflecting. For the largest pieces see life size and large statues.
Every outdoor sculpture we make is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. Get in touch if you would like advice on siting, scale or foundations for a particular position.
FAQs
Which materials last best outdoors?
Marble, cast bronze, granite and stainless steel are all permanent outdoor materials. Marble and bronze change appearance over the years, which most people come to prefer; stainless steel stays as it is. Resin and fibreglass pieces should be kept under cover.
Will an outdoor sculpture survive frost?
Yes, in the materials above. The one thing worth avoiding is letting a piece stand in a puddle through a hard winter, because water in a base can freeze and lift it. A free-draining plinth or pad solves that entirely.
How big should an outdoor sculpture be?
Bigger than the same piece would need to be indoors. Open ground and sky swallow scale, so anything meant to be seen from across a lawn generally needs to be over 160cm. Terraces and courtyards, where the viewer stands close, are the exception.
Do they need a foundation?
Small pieces sit on any level paved surface. Anything life-size or heavier wants a concrete pad or a proper plinth, both for stability and to keep the base out of soil and standing water.
How much maintenance is involved?
Very little. Rinse marble occasionally with clean water and nothing acidic. Bronze needs nothing unless you want to slow the patina, in which case wax it once a year. Stainless steel can be washed and dried like a car.
How are they made, and how long do they take?
Every piece is carved or cast by hand to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
