About Our Stainless Steel Sculptures
Mirror-polished steel is the only sculptural material that shows you its surroundings instead of itself. A polished form standing in a garden holds the sky, the planting and the light in its surface, and changes completely between a clear morning and an overcast afternoon. Nothing else we make is so dependent on where it stands.
It is also the most durable material in the catalogue. Marine-grade stainless does not rust, does not need sealing and does not develop a patina, so a piece looks the same in twenty years as it did on delivery. That is why almost the entire collection is rated for permanent outdoor display, and why it is the material of choice for public and commercial commissions.
The work is overwhelmingly abstract and contemporary: flowing organic forms, folded and twisted sheet, spheres and interlocking rings, alongside a run of stylised animals and figures. Roughly two thirds are mirror-polished and the rest brushed or coloured, and around a quarter combine steel with another material. See the related contemporary work in outdoor sculptures and metal sculptures.
Position it where there is something worth reflecting. A polished piece against a blank fence wastes the material, while the same piece opposite planting, water or a facade earns its keep. Sizes run from 30cm to over four metres, spread fairly evenly, and around a third stand above 160cm. For the largest works see life size and large statues, and for the wider outdoor range garden statues.
Every stainless steel sculpture we make is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping. FAQs
Will stainless steel rust outdoors?
No. Marine-grade stainless is designed for permanent exposure and will not corrode, even in coastal air. It needs no sealing, waxing or protection, which makes it the lowest-maintenance material we work in.
How do I clean a mirror-polished sculpture?
Warm water and a soft cloth, dried immediately to prevent water spotting. For fingerprints a little mild detergent is fine. Never use abrasive pads, wire wool or bleach-based cleaners, all of which will scratch or dull the polish permanently.
Does it show fingerprints and marks?
A mirror finish does, particularly at handling height, in the same way a polished car does. It wipes off easily. Brushed finishes hide marks far better and are worth considering for a hallway or anywhere people pass close.
Where should a reflective sculpture be placed?
Somewhere with something worth reflecting. Opposite planting, water, a facade or an open view, a polished piece animates constantly. Against a blank wall or a plain fence the same piece looks flat, because the material has nothing to work with.
What sizes are available?
From around 30cm to over four metres, spread fairly evenly across the range, with about a third above 160cm. Steel holds large scale well because the sheet carries its own strength without needing bulk.
How are they made, and how long do they take?
Every piece is handcrafted to order by our artists, designed in Birmingham and made in our worldwide studios. Standard production takes around three to four weeks, and we offer free worldwide shipping.
