It rests on a white moulded base whose upper surface sweeps up from the floor and finishes in a small fin, and the glass sits down onto that fin and onto the shoulder around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eAn Ellipse Resting on a Single Rising Fin\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eAn ellipse is harder to place than a circle because it has an axis, and the base has to agree with it. The fin runs along the same axis as the glass, so the whole composition reads as one direction rather than two arguing, and the shoulder around the fin is worked to the curve of the underside so contact is spread rather than concentrated. The white is a lacquered finish over a moulded body, built up and flatted back until there is no orange peel anywhere on a surface that curves in two directions at once - which is the slowest part of making one. The glass is frosted on the underside, so the top face stays smooth to the hand while the frost still softens what shows through.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA long ellipse suits a room with a long axis of its own: in front of a sofa, down the middle of a wide hall, between two facing seats. It is a coffee table, and the frost means what goes on it reads clearly rather than being lost in reflections. Give the base room to be seen from the side, since the sweep up to the fin is most of the design and disappears if the table is pushed against anything. A dark floor throws the white base forward; a pale one lets it merge.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eGlass Tint, Base Finish and Placing the Glass\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhether it is standard or bespoke sets the build: 3–4 weeks or 5–6. Glass can be supplied clear or in a tint, and the frost can be taken to the top face where a matt surface is wanted throughout. The base is available in other lacquer colours and in a matt finish. Plan size is made to order and the ellipse can be drawn to a different ratio, which changes how the fin is set out. The base arrives first and the glass is lowered onto it in the room itself, since a top this long has to travel flat and on its own. The base is a two-person lift and the glass wants two as well, with suction pads rather than hands at the edge.
