Both fish come from the same mass as the wave, and both are included here.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eTwo Fish Laid Out Once, on One Wave\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eCarve two fish as two objects and you keep the freedom to stand them a little further apart when you see them together. That freedom does not exist here. Both animals grow out of a single wave mass, and what looks like clear air between them is stone that had to be taken out from either flank while both fish already enclosed it. So the group is set out once, on the raw block, and never revised - and the void is opened early, while both fish are still oversized and can take a knock from a tool working somewhere too tight to see into. The fins are the last work and the most exposed: each is a thin fan of stone undercut on every side, deep-fluted, and they are cut only when nothing heavy remains to be done anywhere near them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA peach-apricot stone behaves quite differently from the whites in this range. Its own warmth does the separating, so it will read against brick, gravel, render or a dark border with nothing arranged behind it. The one neighbour to avoid is white marble: stand the two together and a visitor notices the mismatch of stone long before noticing either carving. At 150cm the leading fish comes to head height and the wave crest to the waist. Leaping carp are an auspicious subject and they belong beside water - a pool, a tank, a rill, the head of a cascade - where the carved crests answer a real surface. The fluted fins are the finest work and are undercut all round, so light from more than one direction does more for them than a single hard source.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eWarm Stone, and Where It Belongs\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eEighteen to twenty weeks. Laying out both fish on one wave mass comes first, because neither can be shifted afterwards. The wave mass is blocked solid and both fish roughed rising from it, the void between them opened early while both are still oversized. Bodies come down next, then the scale courses, laid from the gill back so the overlap runs true. The crested waves are hollowed and undercut, and the fanned fins with their deep flutes are cut at the very end. Both fish and the wave come from one mass, unpinned and unfilled throughout.
