The top is a thick slab of solid timber, a deep reddish brown with the grain running the length of it and the saw edges left square. It stands on two bases that have nothing in common. At one end is a plain drum in dark bronze metal, smooth and unornamented. At the other is a form in clear resin modelled as a trunk and its roots, irregular and spreading where it meets the floor. Neither base is repeated at the other end.

Timber Between a Drum and a Root

Two bases that have nothing in common, and the slab between them is what holds the argument together. At one end a plain drum of dark bronze metal: smooth, geometric, opaque, saying nothing. At the other a clear resin form modelled as a trunk and its roots, irregular, translucent, spreading where it meets the floor. Neither is repeated and neither is disguised as the other. Above them the timber slab is thick and solid, its grain running the full length, its saw edges left square rather than eased. It is the only warm material on the piece and the only one that is neither clear nor metallic, which is what lets it carry two supports that would otherwise argue.

It is a long table and wants a room with clear floor at both ends as well as along its sides. The two bases are different, so the table has a definite orientation: put the root form at the end people arrive from. Both need level floor. Timber and bronze suit a room with warm materials already in it, and the clear root reads best with light reaching it low down. Six people, and it arrives in parts. Indoor use only.

The Slab, the Two Bases, and Delivery

Time separates the two: a bespoke commission takes 5–6 weeks, a standard piece 3–4. The timber slab is the slow part. You have three decisions to make. The timber is selected from what is in stock and the slab length is quoted to your figure. The drum can be finished in a brushed steel or a black, and the root form is modelled differently on every table. You set the overall length and you set the top thickness. Several ordered together are worked so that the figure in the timber slab agrees. The packing protects the timber edges and the resin root form; moving it wants four people. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Carried on a bronze drum at one end and a clear resin root at the other, this timber table on two unlike feet belongs with our art furniture; two supports that share nothing suit our contemporary and modern sculptures, and its long reddish timber top is kept with our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

75cm

Width

260cm

Depth

90cm

Material

Solid Timber on a Cast Resin and Metal Base
