The plinth beneath is black marble, and the curls stand straight on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Rhythm Rather Than a Shape\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA column made of separate curls has to work as a rhythm, because nobody standing in front of a column this tall takes in the whole of it at once. What they get instead is the interval between one turn and the next. The gaps between the turns shorten as the column rises, so the eye travels faster the higher it goes and the whole thing reads as though it were still turning after you have stopped looking at it. Each curl hooks back over the one below and none of them touches, so every gap is a place the casting has to hold its own weight across. Polished over the whole surface, and the inner faces of the curls take as long as the outer ones.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA hall, an atrium or a stairwell, on the floor and clear of furniture. A plain ground, or the gaps between the curls fill up with whatever is behind and the form closes. A raking light picks the curls out one at a time; anything flat makes them a single mass. The curls read as a rising rhythm from a long way off, which is what a column of this height has to do.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eMore Curls, and Getting It Through the Door\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eAllow 3–4 weeks for a standard piece and 5–6 weeks for a bespoke commission. More curls are set or fewer, the teal is deepened or graded, and the plinth is cut down beneath them. Set more curls and each is drawn tighter, because the casting has one height to divide between them. Two parts on one pallet: the plinth goes down first and the casting is lowered onto it afterwards. Two people, taken by the lowest two curls, and never by the top.
