A raised mesh of crossing ribs covers the whole surface, finest where the sheets turn. The teal is deepest at the stem and around the margins of each sheet, a cool colour like shallow sea water, and it clears completely towards the tips. A black marble base, sent with the sculpture, carries its teal stem.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eTeal Furls Rising From One Stem\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eTeal suits this design: against the cool colour the overlapping furls stay distinct, so their layering shows even from across a room. The mesh of ribs follows each sheet as it bends, tightening at the turns and opening on the broad faces, and every crossing point catches a separate highlight, so the surface sparkles against the cool colour. At the stem the teal is close to solid; out at the tips it fades until only the ribs are left to mark the edge. The effect is of a single growing form opening in two directions at once.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 102cm, standing on its marble, it is well suited to a hall, a calm living room or a landing, on the floor or raised on a low plinth where the curl at the crown is close to the eye of anyone seated nearby. It looks at home against white or pale grey walls, beside chrome and pale timber, and it lifts a scheme of blues and greys. Side light picks up the mesh, and light from behind turns the clear tips almost silver.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eCool Teal, a Raised Mesh and Lifting It\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eOrdinarily a standard piece needs 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission 5–6. The teal can be taken darker towards petrol blue or lighter towards aqua, or the colour kept to the stem with the rest left clear. On commission the mesh of ribs can be drawn finer or coarser, or dropped in favour of a smooth, glossy finish, with the furls set to open wider. A block of white or grey marble is an alternative to the black one. To move it, grip the stem low down and keep fingers off the curl and the edge of the fan.
