teal-frosted-rolled-sheet-resin-sculpture-34cm
Teal Frosted Rolled Sheet Resin Sculpture - 34cm

Description

A frosted teal form drawn as a single sheet, curled tight into a cone at one end and opening out into a broad standing wall at the other. The material is held thin the whole way through and the edges are cut square rather than rounded. The curved sheet meets a surface along one edge, and no stand comes with it.

Thin Enough to Have Been Rolled

The idea only survives if the section stays thin, and thin is exactly what a rigid casting does not want to be. A sheet this slender looks as though it ought to thicken toward the bottom, the way most cast forms do. Allow that and the object stops being a rolled sheet and becomes a wedge with a curl on it, which is a different and far less interesting thing. Here the section is held constant from the tip of the cone to the foot of the wall, so the whole form keeps the look of one rolled sheet, as light as paper and as sure in its curve.

It has a front and a back and reads from about a quarter turn off the axis, where the cone and the open wall are both visible at once. Square on it flattens to a curve. At 34cm it is happiest on a hall console or a side table, with room to approach it at an angle. The frosting holds light on every edge, so a single source from one side draws the whole outline of the sheet and makes the thinness the first thing anyone notices, which is what it is for.

The Section, the Tint, and Delivery

Ours is a 3–4 week build as standard, and a 5–6 week build when the commission is bespoke. The curl is wound tighter or let open, the wall is cut at another height, and the teal is taken toward blue or lifted to a pale mint. A polished version is offered and turns the sheet into a lens, which is a real change of subject: frosted, the piece is about its own edges, and polished it is about what is behind it. The sheet can also be drawn at other spans to order. It is sent in one box with the cone packed hollow and the wall faced on both sides, and one person lifts it. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A sheet that will not lie flat is indoor sculpture; the rolled form is contemporary sculpture; and the frosted teal is resin sculpture.

Specification

Height

30cm

Width

34cm

Depth

34cm

Material

Frosted Cast Teal Resin
