The widest fan opens sideways into a wing with a teal-shaded hollow on its inner face; the next, netted with crossing ribs picked out in teal, is edged along its tall rim in the same colour; and the small curl at its crown is left clear. Beneath it is a polished block of black marble.

Deep Teal Stem and a Clear Crowning Curl

The interest here lies in two kinds of rib. Across the broad wing they run in long parallel lines, sweeping round its hollow, while on the second fan they cross one another in a fine net, like the overlapping scales on a fish. The teal settles into both, darkening every groove so the patterns read clearly, and it is at its fullest in the stem, where the three fans gather. Above it all the small curl stays colourless, a clear cap that keeps the summit light.

The whole piece stands 63cm with its base, a height that suits a sideboard, a desk or a deep shelf in a sitting room or a study, and it is at home in a coastal interior. Daylight from a window brings the teal up to a clear sea colour, and a white or sand-coloured wall flatters it. Leave space around it so the netted fan at the back can be seen as well as the wing. Indoor use only.

Teal Strength, Stone and Careful Handling

Ordinarily a standard piece needs 3–4 weeks and a bespoke commission 5–6. A commission can deepen the teal towards petrol blue or soften it towards aqua, and the clear cap at the summit can take the same teal as the rest. The plain black marble block can be replaced with white or grey. To move it, lift from beneath the marble with the stem held upright, and keep fingers off the wingtip and the scaled edge of the second fan. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Teal ribs netted across a climbing fan connect this spiral with our organic sculptures, our resin sculptures and our contemporary and modern sculptures.

Specification

Height

57cm

Width

46cm

Depth

28cm

Base

25 x 20 x 6cm

Material

Teal Cast Resin on a Black Marble Base
