The skirt is doing two jobs: it is the largest part of the silhouette and it is the second point of contact, without which the figure would not stand. A figure balanced on one foot puts everything through an ankle, and the body is heaviest exactly there and lightest at the brim. Polished over the whole surface, so the swirl reads at depth rather than as a pattern on the skin.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA console, a desk or a hall table, with the skirt turned outward into the room. A plain ground behind it, because the white in the body will take up any colour that is there. A lamp to one side gathers the teal into the folds of the skirt, which is where it lies deepest. Widen the brim and the foot has to be broadened under it, since the whole figure balances on that one contact. The same figure is made in red and pink, and in two other bodies besides, each of which changes what the hat does to a room. The stone is set down first and checked, and the figure goes on after it with nothing fixing the two. One person, taken around the waist and never by the hat.
