It stands on a thick canted plinth with a broad dressed face at the front.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eTight Ringlet Mane Cut Against a Smooth Flank\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe mane is the work here and it is cut against the grain of the rest: every ringlet is drilled at the centre and then opened out with a chisel so it stands proud of the neck, while the flank behind it is left as one smooth unbroken surface. That contrast is what gives the head its weight at a distance. The ball under the forepaw is turned to a true sphere before the paw is laid over it, because a paw cut first will never sit down onto a curve, and the claws are freed at the very end.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA standing lion with a ball is a gate animal and reads best where people pass it, so a drive entrance, a pair of piers, a broad flight of steps or the corner of a terrace all suit it. At 180cm it meets an adult above eye level, so give it clear space to be seen from a distance as well as close to. The plinth beds dry onto a prepared concrete pad; no fixing is needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe Front Face and What Can Go On It\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eTwelve weeks. The plinth is cut and its canted faces dressed first, the front face worked flat and left ready, and the animal blocked out above it afterwards. The face can be left plain or cut to your own wording and dates, set out by hand to your spacing, and the depth is matched to the stone rather than to a machine.
