Three smaller deer are grouped around it: one seated at the left, one lying with its head up at the front and one lying at the right. A small bird perches on the stag's back, and all five animals are carved on one slab with a canted front edge.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Many Tined Antler Rack Won From One Block\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eAn antler rack is the most exposed carving we do. Every tine is a cantilever with no support under it, so the whole rack is roughed as a solid mass and opened out only when the head and neck below will take no more work, and the tips are freed last of all. The ruff is cut the opposite way, in deep separated locks driven down into the chest so the neck reads heavy against the fine legs. The three smaller animals are carved down into the same slab rather than added to it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA group this wide reads along its length, so it wants a position seen from the side rather than end on: a lawn edge, a broad border, the turn of a drive or a clearing in planting. The raised head brings the antler tips well above an adult, so allow clear space above as well as around. The slab beds dry onto a firm level base and no foundation is needed beyond a compacted bed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eFive Animals on One Slab, Not a Set\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eSixteen weeks. The slab is dressed and levelled first, the standing animal blocked out on it, and the three lying and seated deer cut down into the same stone afterwards so there is no joint anywhere in the group. The antler rack and the bird are the last work. Nothing is pinned or filled. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.
