A flared crest is flung back over the head, the slim body twists upward in a rippled S, and the skirt kicks out to one side just above the foot. The smoke gathers deep at the crest and in the skirt and greys through the body, where the ripples of the surface catch pale highlights. A block of black marble comes with it.

Smoke Black, Rippled With Light

Smoke black makes this figure moody and graphic. Its rippled surface, which reads softly in a clear casting, becomes a field of pale highlights against the dark resin, so the twist of the body is drawn in light. The colour is heavy at the two ends and eases through the middle, and each piece holds the smoke a little differently. The polish is taken to a deep gloss, and against the black marble below, the figure seems to rise straight out of its base.

A console, a sideboard or a dresser in a hall or a living room, against a pale wall where the dark outline can register. It suits monochrome, grey and natural rooms and looks strong beside white ceramics and steel. Side light brings the ripples up as silver lines; flat light leaves a dark silhouette. At a distance the figure becomes a single dark stroke.

Darker, Lighter, or Another Smoke, and Delivery

Allow 3–4 weeks for a standard piece and 5–6 weeks for a bespoke commission. The smoke can be laid heavier for a near-solid black or lighter for a pale charcoal, and a grey or brown smoke can take its place. The block can be made in pale stone for contrast. The same figure also comes in bottle green, in aqua and clear, and in the black and cream original, each sold separately. It arrives crated on its block, and it needs one person, who should take it by the block and keep the crest clear of door frames. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Smoke black drawn in rippled highlights sits among our resin sculptures; the twisting, wind-thrown figure belongs with our contemporary and modern sculptures, and further figures for an entrance stand in our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

62cm

Width

24cm

Depth

14cm

Base

25 x 20 x 6cm

Material

Smoke Black Cast Resin on Black Marble
