The mane is therefore cut deeper than it would be on a matte figure and the polish is carried down into the undercuts by hand. Black granite takes that polish better than any other stone and shows nothing of its grain once finished.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA guardian lion is sited to face something rather than to mark a plot: the head of an avenue, a gate, the foot of steps or the entrance to a family enclosure. It reads as a sentinel, so it wants a position with something to guard and clear ground in front. The plinth can be lettered if the piece is used as a memorial. The block is sawn, the figure roughed and the plinth cut to suit it, then the entire surface is polished in stages from coarse grit to buff, and the mane undercuts are finished by hand at the end.
