The lion is then seated into it so the haunches disappear into the stone and there is no line where figure meets base. The turned head is the only part cantilevered clear, and it is finished last.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA rock base means this belongs in planting rather than on paving: a border, a rockery, the edge of a woodland walk, a gravel garden. Against a hard formal surface the rough boulder reads as unfinished, which it is not. The turned head gives it a direction, so set it looking along a path rather than across one. The boulder is worked first and the figure seated into it, because the reverse leaves a joint that no amount of finishing will hide. The mane locks are cut in long passes down the shoulder and the turned head is freed at the end, once the neck below it will take no more work.
