Three ribbed fans leave the foot together and wind about each other on the way up: the broadest swings out sideways as a long wing, the next climbs to a tall rolled edge, and the third rolls forward at the crown. Fine ribs follow every curve, each holding a deeper line of red in its groove. A squared black marble block comes as its base.

Scarlet Ribs Turning About a Single Foot

Scarlet is an unforgiving colour on a twisting form, because every change of angle shows as a change of shade. Here that works in the piece's favour: as a fan swings away the scarlet darkens almost to garnet, and as it swings round again it lightens to rose, so the eye can follow the spiral round by colour alone. The ribs add a finer rhythm over the broad one, fanning out across each sheet and opening wider apart towards the rims, and on the climbing fan the ribs meet and knit into a fine lattice. A lamp to one side picks out each rib as its own thin highlight, while flat light from the front reduces the spiral to one silhouette.

Its 61cm is made for a raised surface rather than the floor: a sideboard, a wide desk or a console in a study or a dining room puts the spiral where a standing visitor meets it. There is no single front, so leave space to walk round it. Scarlet carries a long way across a pale room and turns richer against dark timber or a deep green wall, and a plain background shows the twist of the fans most clearly.

Red Depth, Marble Choice and Lifting by the Block

Once ordered, a standard piece takes 3–4 weeks and a bespoke one 5–6. On commission the scarlet can be taken darker, towards oxblood, or softer, towards coral, and the rims can be left to clear so that the colour stays in the body of each fan. The ribs can be drawn finer or bolder, or left off for a smooth polished spiral, and the block can be cut in white or grey marble. To move it, lift by the marble block with both hands, keeping the spiral upright, and never take its weight on the wing, a rim or the turned crown. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A scarlet spiral of three ribbed fans on black marble finds company in our organic sculptures, our resin sculptures and our contemporary and modern sculptures.

Specification

Height

55cm

Width

50cm

Depth

30cm

Base

25 x 20 x 6cm

Material

Scarlet Cast Resin on a Black Marble Base
