The price here is for one animal, and a mirrored partner can be carved to order.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eSquiggling a Whole Animal\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe entire surface of this tiger is vermiculated - covered in a dense random field of worm-like squiggles cut into the stone - and it is the slowest finish we offer. There is no shortcut in it and no machine that does it: each squiggle is a short cut with a fine chisel, and the field has to stay random. Any drift into rows or into a repeating rhythm shows up instantly as a pattern where there should be none, and a patch worked in a different mood from its neighbour reads as a seam. So the field is worked in one continuous campaign rather than in sessions, and over the muzzle, the ruff and the paws it is cut finer and closer, because a squiggle at body scale would swallow a feature at that size.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is a sandstone piece in a range that is mostly marble, and it looks different for it: matte, warm, and softer in the light, with none of marble's brightness. At 200cm the roaring head is close to eye level as you come up to it. That suits it to gate piers, a courtyard entrance, the head of steps, the corner of a terrace - the guardian positions. Sandstone is more porous than marble, so in a wet climate it will green up sooner in shade and wants a position with some air round it. The vermiculated surface is shadow at close range and texture at a distance, and it is worth a position people pass within a few feet of.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eSandstone, and Why It Reads Softer\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eTwenty-four to twenty-six weeks, and the finish is most of it. Cutting a vermiculated field over a whole animal is the slowest work in this range. The base and the stump pier are dressed first, since the braced forepaw depends on the stump being final. The animal is roughed seated, the haunches and the standing foreleg left heavy, then the head is cut with the jaws opened and the canines left thick until last. The ruff strands are separated. Then the whole surface is vermiculated in one campaign, finer over the face and paws. Animal, stump and base come from one block, with nothing pinned or filled.
