The eyes are dark and read as an applied finish rather than as stone. The body crosses over itself twice as it rises. The scale pattern runs the entire length, close along the throat and wide over the heaped coils. Beneath it the coils spread over low carved rock on a canted rectangular slab. White marble, neutral in the figure, grey veining threading the slab beneath it.

The Void Where the Body Crosses Itself

This snake passes over its own body twice on the way up, and each crossing leaves an enclosed space with stone on every side of it. Those two voids are the difficulty. They cannot be reached from outside once the coils around them are at their finished section, and they cannot be left solid without the whole thing reading as a lump. So they are planned on the raw block, before the first cut, and opened early - while every coil around them is still oversized and can take a knock from a tool working in a space too tight to see into. Each surface inside the void is then finished blind, by feel, and only afterwards are the outer coils brought down to section, working from the voids outward.

At this height the lifted head arrives at about eye level, and the open mouth with the forked tongue is what you meet. At 160cm the lifted head is near eye level, and the open mouth is what you meet. That is a deliberate and slightly confrontational effect and it wants space in front of it - the end of a path, an island in gravel, the centre of a courtyard - rather than a position where somebody comes round a corner into it. The two crossing voids read as air only with light behind them, so avoid backing it against a wall; sky, water or open lawn behind will show the whole rise of the body instead of a silhouette.

A Head Near Your Own

Eighteen to twenty weeks. Cutting the void where the body crosses itself twice is planned from the raw block onward. The slab and the low carved rock are dressed first, the heap of coils blocked above them, and both crossing voids opened while every coil around them is still oversized. Their inner surfaces are finished by feel before the outer coils come down to section. The rising neck is held thick until late, the scales incised from the head backward, and the thin forked tongue cut last of all. The whole reptile and its slab are free of pins, dowels and fillers throughout. Some 2,390kg in one piece, craned into position and bedded onto a prepared pad. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Coiled subjects sit apart in animal sculptures, and garden-scale carving under garden statues.

Specification

Height

160cm

Base

Included

Material

Hand-Carved Natural Marble
