An open jaw gives the head a dark void that reads from any distance and hides a multitude; a closed jaw has to be got right in the line of the lip alone, and a millimetre out reads as a sulk rather than as repose. The lip line is therefore the last cut on the whole piece, made when nothing else needs a tool near the head. The separated locks are undercut to give the mane its weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA quiet head suits a quiet position: a courtyard, a walled garden, a hall, a landing, a bench end. A roaring lion asks for a gateway; this one does not, and it will sit comfortably indoors where a snarling figure would not. The slab and body are roughed as one, the mane locks separated and undercut, and the head left as a mass until everything else is finished.
