The stem is doing two jobs: it carries the ribbon and it gives the winding something to be read against. Without it the turns would float and the colour order would be much harder to follow from any single position. A colour run laid along the body rather than across it means each turn shows a different part of it, and the clear gaps between turns keep them separate.
