Violet through both plumes, deepest in the ribbed mass at the foot and clearing at the tips. The ribbing runs up into both plumes before it fades. Nothing is sent with it; the ribbed mass is cut level underneath.

Two Plumes Out of One Foot

At this size the ribbing at the foot is doing structural work and not decorative: nothing else on the object has any depth to it at all, and everything above is a sheet. The ribs are drawn deepest directly under each plume and shallowest between them, which is not where a pattern would put them. One body carrying both plumes is the whole of it: the resin runs clear up out of the ribbed foot into each of them and stops in neither. Polished over both plumes with the ribbed mass left as cast.

It wants a wide room with two or three approaches to it. A pale wall behind it, or a violet mass this size closes to one silhouette. Two sources at least: a plume lit from one side leaves its neighbour dark. From the far end of a room it is a single rising shape, and the two plumes separate as you come toward it.

A Single Plume, and a Pallet at the Door

A standard piece takes 3–4 weeks to make, and a bespoke commission 5–6. Ask us for a single plume, for the violet exchanged, or for the ribbing carried further up. Take a plume away and the other is drawn wider to fill the room it leaves, so the piece keeps its spread. Which side the plumes throw to is settled before casting. Palleted in a single crate and lifted into position by machine. Four people and a trolley, hands at the ribbed mass. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Two violet plumes thrown out to one side belong to our organic sculptures; the ribbed foot they rise from joins our resin sculptures, and a wide room entered from more than one side lets it separate among our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

171.5cm

Width

140cm

Depth

132cm

Material

Cast Violet Resin, Polished and Ribbed
