Beneath it the base is made of pink cast resin links, and rather than knotting tight they lie open and splayed against each other, one standing upright as a tall loop and the rest fanning outward at the floor. The pink is deepest where two links touch and clearest along the free curves, and the glass above darkens the whole arrangement.

Links Lying Open Rather Than Knotted

The links are not knotted tight but left open: one stands upright as a tall loop, the others fan outward and rest against each other at the floor, so the base spreads out flat and reads far more clearly as a set of separate parts. The pink is deepest where two links touch and clearest along the free curves. Above it the glass is smoked rather than clear, dark enough to read as a plane in its own right, which pushes the links into shadow and keeps the whole piece quiet.

This stands in front of a sofa and wants to be seen from the side, where the splayed links read as separate loops. The smoked glass makes the top a plane rather than a window, so what is stored beneath will not show; equally, the base is darker than it would be under clear glass and wants light low down. It takes two people and the glass comes apart. Indoor use.

The Links, the Glass, and the Wait

Time separates the two: a bespoke commission takes 5–6 weeks, a standard piece 3–4. The splayed links are what fills the time. You have three decisions to make. The pink is offered in other tints, the glass is available clear instead of smoked, and how the links lie is set differently on every piece. You give us the top diameter. Top diameter and glass thickness are each specified. Ordered as a group, the pieces are worked together so the way the links lie against each other lines up. The outermost of the splayed links is padded first, and then it is a four-person job to walk it in. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Pink links splayed open beneath smoked glass take their place among our art furniture; the loose arrangement suits our contemporary and modern sculptures, and a low seating group among our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

32cm

Diameter

100cm

Material

Tinted Cast Resin with a Tinted Glass Top
