Each is bent into a broad arch that stands on the floor at both ends and carries an arm across the top, so the same piece of material is arm and leg together. A seat spans between them and a back panel rises behind. Every part is smoked pink - light enough to see the floor through, dark enough to read as a colour.

Two Arches Serving as Arms and Legs at Once

An arch that lands on the floor at both ends has to be formed to a radius it will hold under load, and unlike a leg it cannot be adjusted afterwards by shortening. The two arches are drawn over the same former and then set against one another rather than against a gauge, because two arches that differ even slightly will rock however true each one is on its own. The four floor contacts are faced together at the end. The smoked pink is cast in and doubles wherever you look through two panels at once, which is why the chair is darkest at the arms where the arch turns and palest across the open back. The seat is set into the arches rather than onto them, so its edge is hidden.

A low, wide chair on two arches is a lounge piece rather than a dining one: the back is low and the frontage generous, so it suits a sitting room, a wide landing or a bedroom corner. Because the arches are open you see the floor through the middle of the chair, which keeps it from filling a small room. Smoked pink is a warm tint and sits with timber, brass and pale plaster rather than against cool greys. Side light shows the doubling at the arms.

The Smoke, the Arches, and Getting It Through

The standard build is 3–4 weeks and the bespoke build 5–6. The smoke depth and the tint are specified with the order, and the same chair is made in a clear acrylic if you want the form without the colour. A seat pad can be made up for regular use. The arches are bonded to the seat and back here, so the chair arrives assembled - a joint made on site could not be brought to the same finish and these joints are in plain view. Its width makes for a broad crate, so check that every door on the way in will take it. Bringing it in is a job for two. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Two arches serving as arms and legs belong with our acrylic sculptures; smoked pink doubling at the arms leads to our geometric sculptures, and a low lounge chair for a landing joins our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

70cm

Width

80cm

Depth

78cm

Material

Smoked Pink Cast Acrylic
