Short ear tufts lift above the head and a small beak sits between the eyes. The breast and flanks are cut in overlapping scalloped feathers, the folded wings fall close at the sides, and both feet grip the front edge below. It sits on a plain rectangular plinth. White marble, grey veining drifting in soft diagonal threads across the plinth.

Two Eye Rings, Cut to the Same Depth

Almost everything about this bird is forgiving and its two eyes are not. They are cut as deep concentric rings, and because they sit side by side on a flat frontal face the eye compares them directly - so a millimetre of difference in depth between the two, or half a degree of difference in the angle each is sunk at, stops reading as an owl and starts reading as a squint. There is no way to fix it afterwards either: deepening the shallower ring to match means widening it, and then the two are no longer the same size. So both rings are set out together from one centre line, sunk in matched passes - a little from one, the same from the other, back and forth - and neither is finished until both can be judged side by side.

Most animal sculpture is composed in profile. An owl is composed frontally: it faces outward, and the two eyes are the entire piece. At 150cm the two great eyes sit near head height and meet you square on. So it wants to be approached head-on rather than passed by - at the end of a path, in an alcove, on a landing, facing down a corridor, framed in a doorway. It is compact enough for a hall, a library or a wide sill, and at under two tonnes an ordinary floor will take it. Give it a plain background: scalloped feather carving this fine disappears against foliage or patterned brick, and reads properly only against render, plaster or clipped green.

A Bird That Meets You Square On

Sixteen to eighteen weeks. Cutting the two eye rings to matching depth governs the head, since a millimetre out reads as a squint. The plinth is dressed and squared, the bird roughed above it as one upright mass with the folded wings kept close. The two eye rings are sunk together in matched passes once the frontal face is true. The scalloped breast feathers are laid out in courses from the throat downward and cut late, and the ear tufts and gripping feet are freed last, both standing clear on thin stone. Neither the owl nor its plinth carries a pin, a dowel or any filler at all. Some 1,969kg for owl and plinth, gantry-borne and bedded onto a prepared footing. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Owls perch in one corner of animal sculptures, and compact work belongs to indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

150cm

Base

Included

Material

Hand-Carved Natural Marble
