Amber at every edge clearing to near-colourless through the middle of each sheet. Nothing comes underneath; the sweep is cut level at the foot.

Sheets That Have to Stay Apart at the Crown

Sheets folding over one another have to stay apart where they turn or the curl closes into a solid, and that is the whole difficulty of this one: the reach past the foot grows with every sheet added above. They are drawn thinning as they rise, so the outermost is the finest of them and reaches furthest. Striation through a tinted body is what gives the sheets their depth: each line holds a little more colour than the face around it, so a flat surface reads as folded. Polished over every sheet with the striation left as worked, and the outer edges taken thin.

It belongs on a hall floor, set where the curl at the crown is above the eye. It needs a pale wall behind it, or the amber edges have nothing to be bright against. Lit from behind the striation runs the full height; lit from anywhere else it flattens to one amber. The curl at the crown reads from across a room and the striation is a near fact.

A Tighter Curl, Other Tones, and One Case

Reckon on 3–4 weeks for a standard piece, or 5–6 weeks for a bespoke one. If you would rather a tighter curl at the crown, it is drawn that way before casting, and other tones can be run through. Draw the curl further over and the sheets beneath are widened, since the reach past the foot has to be answered below. It is shipped upright in one case and placed as it comes out. Three people. The sheet edges are the thinnest part of it. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

Layered amber sheets sweeping up into a curl belong to our organic sculptures; the striation drawn along every fold joins our resin sculptures, and a hall floor with the curl above the eye gives it room in our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

150cm

Width

85cm

Depth

43cm

Material

Cast Resin Graded Orange to Clear
