The colour deepens from orange at the top to red towards the foot, and the grid of cube edges shows as fine lines across the whole face.

A Sphere Drawn in Pixels

The idea is to make a round thing out of square ones, and the pleasure is in how well it works: from a distance the stepped outline reads as a circle, close to it breaks into a grid of cubes. Each cube is an open box of acrylic sheet, so light passes through the colour and the whole sphere glows. The grading from orange to red runs down the face like a sunset, and the edges of the cubes, where the sheets meet, draw a fine lattice across it.

At this size it needs a large open space: an atrium, a shopping court, a hotel lobby, an event space or a covered courtyard, where it can be seen from far off. Daylight through it makes the colour blaze, and after dark, under the lights of the space around it, it glows like a lantern. It is a landmark piece and needs nothing around it.

Colour, Size and Siting It

Build times separate standard from bespoke: 3–4 weeks against 5–6. It can be made in another colour, blue, green, yellow or a graded rainbow, and at another diameter to suit the space it will fill. A blue sphere reads as a planet; orange and red as the sun, and a single colour throughout makes the grid of cubes the main event. Ahead of its arrival, both the way in and the spot it will occupy should be checked, since a piece of this size needs a clear path and a level, solid floor. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A pixel sphere of orange and red cubes glowing like a low sun, this landmark piece joins our acrylic sculptures, our geometric sculptures and our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

240cm

Width

260cm

Depth

260cm

Material

Orange and Red Acrylic Sheet
