Olive fills the broad face and goes to near-black at every drawn edge, so the turn reads as a change of colour. A small black block comes with it, set under the middle of the ribbon, which meets it at a single point.

One Gesture, Held Unbroken

A ribbon given a half turn along its length is one gesture, and every decision on it follows from keeping that gesture unbroken. The turn is made at the neck, where the ribbon draws in tight between the leaf-shaped end and the broad middle, so the two read as one movement folding over rather than as parts meeting. A ribbon this long in glass would need a seam, and there is no seam anywhere on this one to find. Polished to a full shine, the twist reads as one continuous highlight running its length.

This wants a long uninterrupted surface to itself, and a sideboard is usually the answer. Keep the wall behind unbroken, because the ribbon reads as an outline and an outline needs clear ground. A light set low at one end is what brings the turn out; overhead light flattens it. It reads as a long horizontal from anywhere in the room, and the half turn is a near view.

The Turn, the Block and Delivery

Production takes approximately 3–4 weeks for a standard piece, or 5–6 weeks for a bespoke commission. The turn is given another half twist, the olive is lightened toward the edges, and the block is made at other sizes. Add a turn and the length goes with it, since the ribbon is one continuous run rather than a set of parts. Ribbon and block are crated separately and married up in the room, with the ribbon set down last. Two people for this: it is a long run of solid resin and it does not want to flex. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

An olive ribbon folding over at its neck above a black block joins our organic sculptures, our resin sculptures and our indoor sculptures.

Specification

Height

48cm overall

Width

96cm

Depth

30cm

Base

30 x 25 x 6cm, part of the overall height

Material

Cast Olive Resin on a Black Stone Block
