A deep square black block is supplied, wider than the spiral standing on it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Column That Happens to Turn\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eMade opaque, the same spiral stops pretending: it reads as a solid column that happens to turn. Opacity changes what a spiral is for. The clear ones are about what you can see through the turns; this one is about the shadow each turn throws on the one beneath, and it needs a wall behind it rather than a window. An opaque body this size is a different problem from a tinted one: the grey has to read the same at the foot and at the top or the turns stop looking like one object. Matt, and the turns are described by shading alone with no reflection anywhere to help.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA hall or a wide landing, with enough floor around the block that the block is read as part of the piece. Almost anything will do behind it, which is what an opaque body buys and a clear spiral cannot offer. A raking source picks out each turn in sequence; anything flat makes the whole column one grey shape. The silhouette carries a long way and nothing else about it does.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eBringing It to a Polish, and Delivery\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eEvery standard piece is made in 3–4 weeks, and every bespoke commission in 5–6. The grey is taken toward bronze, the surface is polished, and the block is cut shallower. Polish it and the grey has to be re-chosen, because one colour reads darker off a gloss surface than off a matt one. The block is set and levelled first, then the spiral lowered onto it. Two people throughout. Two people. It is heavier than the clear spirals at the same height because none of it is hollow.
