The change from magenta to colourless happens at a plane rather than over a distance, so it reads as an edge and not as a fade. That is the entire difference between this piece and the graduated versions of the same idea. Magenta is the one pigment in this group that goes almost opaque at depth, so the standing body reads as a solid slab while the thrown arm stays clear enough to see through. A white or stone-coloured wall. Magenta against a warm ground turns muddy. Straight light makes it glow; raking light finds the arm thrown out at the waist and throws its shadow across the column.
