Those narrow planes are what give the outline its shape - the big face itself is almost flat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eOne Face, and the Border Around It\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhen one face is a third of what you see, the composition is one field and the planes around it, and those planes are the part that has to be drawn. The big face does very little work: it is a field, it returns one hue, and beyond making it flat there is nothing to design. The second colour is a broad orange plane turning away at one side, but everything that gives the piece its outline is in the narrow yellow and lime planes along the other edge and over the top, and there are many more of them than there appear to be. They are also the fiddly ones - each is short, each meets two neighbours at an angle, and an error in one is visible as a kink in the silhouette because the silhouette is made of them. So the border is set out first and the field is cut to what it leaves, which is the reverse of how a many-faceted block is worked.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFifty-eight centimetres puts it at console and sideboard height, and it has a front: the big face wants to greet the room. Console, sideboard and wide-shelf positions around chest height suit it, set so the magenta face is the first thing seen. Light is not critical here, because a field of colour holds up in ordinary room light. What it does want is nothing patterned immediately behind it, since the mint across the bottom goes nearly clear and reads whatever is on the other side of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe Border, the Film and Installation\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe standard build is 3–4 weeks and the bespoke build 5–6. The border paces this build: the narrow planes around the field are the awkward ones, there are more of them than there look to be, and each has to meet two neighbours cleanly. Field size, border and film are specified when the piece is ordered - two fields at an angle to each other, a narrower border, or the whole thing at hall scale. The films run magenta and mint as here, blue-to-violet, or a warm gold-to-rose. The field can also be left clear so the border alone carries the colour. It is lifted by its broad faces, never by the narrow planes at its edges, and set straight down.
