The heads must turn inward by the same degree or the pair reads as one lion and one accident, and that angle is struck on both blocks before either mane is begun. The floral roundel on each apron is cut to the same depth for the same reason. Everything that will be seen twice is measured twice.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA facing pair frames rather than guards: set them either side of a short path, a threshold, a pool or a flight of steps so the two heads close the space between them. That works at a narrower spacing than an outward-facing pair, which is often the deciding factor in a courtyard. A single lion from the pair still stands well alone at a corner.
