It leaves the slab at an angle and carries the head clear of the stone, so the section where it springs is the thinnest and most loaded part of the piece, and it is left oversize until the head above it is finished. Grey granite will not hold a fine mane, so the locks are cut broad and deep and read from a distance rather than close to.
