It rests on a shallow moulded base slab carved with a continuous scroll band, with no tall plinth under it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Cub Tucked Under the Forepaw\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA cub under the paw rather than beside it is the awkward version of the motif, because the parent\\u2019s weight appears to bear on it and the carving has to make that look easy while the stone between them is the thinnest in the piece. The cub is left joined to the paw above and the base below, taking load at both ends, and its head is the last thing freed. The scroll band round the base is cut in one continuous run with no corner joints.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWithout a tall plinth this sits low, which suits a doorstep, a hearth, a terrace edge, a conservatory or the head of a short flight rather than a formal gateway. Low means the head is read at close range, so it rewards a position people pass within arm\\u2019s reach. It can go indoors as readily as out. A level hard surface is all it needs.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Low Base Instead of a Plinth\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThirteen weeks. The base slab and its scroll band are cut first and the lion seated on the finished stone, so the band runs unbroken beneath the figure rather than stopping at it. The cub is roughed with the body and freed only when the shoulder above it is finished. The teeth are the last detail cut.
