The longevity roundel on the foot block is cut last of all because it sits where a mallet would otherwise rest. The lion above is fitted to the finished cap.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA three-tier plinth lifts the head to standing eye level and above, which changes where the piece belongs: the foot of steps, a raised terrace, the end of an avenue, anywhere it is approached from below rather than looked down on. It will dominate a small courtyard. The three plinth blocks are cut and dry-set in the yard before any moulding is finished, because a joint that does not close can still be corrected at that stage and cannot afterwards.
