The colour runs from a slate blue-grey at the head through clear grey, with ochre and green caught low down, to a pale foot, and the top is cut flat across.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Trunk Split From Top to Foot\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe texture is modelled over the whole form and the cleft is opened in the mould rather than cut afterwards, so both inner faces carry the same worked surface as the outside. Holding two halves true to each other through the cure is the difficult part, because a lean of a degree over this height shows against any wall. The colours are poured in sequence and worked together while all are still live, so the slate blue-grey of the head fades into clear grey, and the ochre and green further down sit in the body rather than on it. The top is cut flat across the closed head so it reads as one clean plane.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 110cm this stands alone on the floor in a hall, a corner or an alcove, and it wants light reaching the cleft from the side, because the gap between the halves is the whole point of the piece. Against a dark wall the split closes up and the column reads as one mass. The footprint is small for the height, so it stands best on something hard and level rather than on a rug.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe Cleft, the Graded Colour, and the Wait\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eOnce ordered, a standard piece takes 3–4 weeks and a bespoke one 5–6. The cleft face is the slow part. There are three decisions. The cleft is opened wider or closed to a seam, the three colours are chosen at order, and the texture is worked coarser. Column height and plan width are quoted to whatever you need. Order more than one together and the depth of the cleft is matched across them. The crate is built around the cleft lips and the cut top, and two people should carry it.
