Nothing is supplied under it, and both legs are cut flat where they meet the ground.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Combed Surface on a Body Deep Enough to Hold One\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eCombing a surface takes the outline away unless the body behind it is deep enough to keep one, which is why this arch is drawn thick where a sheet would have done the same work to look at. The striations then read as a surface laid over a solid instead of as the whole of the object. The mass is what carries the striation: a body this deep takes a combed surface without losing its outline, and a thin one would read as a sheet of texture. Combed into fine parallel striations over the whole surface, with no polished area anywhere.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFloor work for a wide hall, set clear of a wall so the opening can be seen through. A pale ground behind it, so the opening between the legs reads as an opening. Light from behind puts the whole arch into silhouette and the striation into relief at once.
