The upper face is left smooth and level so it works as a surface, and the stump is cast hollow rather than as a solid mass.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Stump Flaring From a Waisted Base\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe grain is modelled over the whole flare and swirls as the section widens, so the pattern has to be laid out for a surface that changes diameter at every height. The waisted base is the narrowest part and carries everything above it, and it is cast hollow at an even wall, which is harder than a solid mass: the wall has to hold that thickness through the waist where the form pulls in. The oval top is worked level in the upper mould face and taken to a smooth finish while the flare is left textured. The foot is faced flat and true across its whole plan.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt is a tall table to stand at, in an entrance or a kitchen rather than a dining room, and its oval top gives no head to the group around it. The swirled flare is read from every side, so it does not want a wall against it. Being hollow it is far easier to reposition than a stump of this size looks, which matters in a room in regular use.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eThe Grain, the Hollow Wall, and How It Travels\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt takes 3–4 weeks to make as standard, and 5–6 weeks to make bespoke. Most of it is the swirling grain. You settle three things. The green can be taken to any tint, the grain can be run more finely or more openly, and the top can be worked oval or round. Neither the stump length nor the flare height is fixed. The group is made as one so that the swirl of the grain reads the same on each piece. The waisted base and the oval rim are boxed so no face touches the crate, and being hollow it is far lighter to handle than its size suggests.
