Two handles stand upright from the rim, and the belly is worked in relief the whole way round above three cast legs. Teal through the whole mass, deepest where the walls double and clearing at the rim. It stands on its own cast legs and nothing is supplied under it.

Relief With Something Always Behind It

Relief on a solid vessel answers only to itself. Here the far wall is visible behind the near one at every angle, so a pattern that works alone can still fall badly against what shows through it. Each face is drawn against its opposite for that reason, which is not how the form is usually made. Casting a vessel of this weight in a clear body is what makes the relief readable from both sides at once: the pattern on the far wall shows through the near one and the two never quite line up. The body is taken to a polish and the relief left exactly as worked.

It needs a hall floor with room to be walked round. A pale wall behind it, or the teal closes to black at the shoulders. Two lamps rather than one, or half the relief stays in shadow whichever way it is turned. The silhouette carries the length of a hall; the relief arrives at about two paces.

Working the Relief Again, and a Pallet at the Door

Once ordered, a standard piece takes 3–4 weeks and a bespoke one 5–6. We will work the relief differently, exchange the teal, or make the vessel at another size. Change the size and the relief is redrawn rather than scaled, since the pattern keeps its own depth whatever the body does. The relief is drawn afresh at any other size. Palleted in one crate and lifted into position by machine. Four people and a trolley; nothing about it is carried by hand. Our main studios are in the UK (Birmingham) and Dubai, with additional global workshops.

A ritual vessel with upright handles and a relief belly stands in our indoor sculptures; its old form in a new material suits our contemporary and modern sculptures, and its teal belly places it among our resin sculptures.

Specification

Height

110cm

Width

95cm

Depth

95cm

Material

Cast Green Resin, Worked in Relief
