From top to foot its colour moves from a pale grey, through a soft green across the middle, to a green that is at its darkest where the column meets the floor. With no band or ornament on it, the grade alone gives the column its character.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Plain Frosted Column Graded from Grey to Green\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA column this plain has nowhere to hide an uneven finish, so the work goes into the surface and the grade. The frost is taken evenly over the whole curved side to a soft satin, with no polished patches left to catch the eye, and the top is brought flat with a crisp edge, since a rounded or chipped arris shows at once on a disc this simple. The change from grey to green is kept level across the curve rather than drifting into a slant. Each one is cast and finished by hand, so the grade never settles in quite the same place twice.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 91cm it lifts whatever stands on it to about waist level, where a bowl, a vase or a small sculpture can be seen from across a room and still reached by hand. It suits an entrance hall, the turn of a landing or an empty corner of a living room, and two set either side of a doorway give an entrance some ceremony. The green sits well against white or pale walls and beside house plants.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eGrade Direction, Colour and How the Column Arrives\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eSet aside 3–4 weeks for a standard piece and 5–6 weeks for a bespoke commission. If the green should sit at the top rather than the foot, we make it that way round; the fade can also be run through blue, amber or smoke, or left out for an even frosted grey from top to bottom. The height and diameter are made to order, and a group of columns at different heights can be made as one commission so that their grades match. It travels upright and whole in a fitted crate, and arrives ready to stand, with nothing to assemble.
