The acrylic is dichroic and the colour moves with the eye: the broad faces read a clear aqua-green, one narrow side shows pale rose and grey, and the sloping cap turns a warm amber. Its faces are flat and its edges sharp, with no carving or texture anywhere, so the cut and the colour carry the piece between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eA Diagonal Slice Across a Slim Green Prism\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eA prism this slim depends on its proportions and on the edges that run its full height. The broad faces are only a little wider than the narrow ones, so from most angles it reads as a column of colour, and the diagonal at the top gives that column a direction. Each long edge has to run straight and sharp from the foot to the cap, because on a plain form the eye follows the edges first and a wavering one shows over the whole height. Where two faces meet, the colour changes across a single bright line rather than blending, so the green of a broad face and the rose of the narrow one stay distinct.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt 147cm it meets most adults at about eye level, which makes it a floor piece to be seen across a space: the end wall of a corridor, a gallery bay, a reception or a wide stair landing. Two or three light sources from different sides keep its colours on the move, where a single downlight leaves the faces flat. It needs a hard, level floor, and a plain pale wall a little way behind it lets the amber of the cap stand out against the green below.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch2\u003eAngle of the Slice, Colour and Carrying It Upright\u003c\/h2\u003e\u003cp\u003eEvery standard piece is made in 3–4 weeks, and every bespoke commission in 5–6. For a commission the slice can be drawn at a steeper or a gentler angle, or taken square across for a plain column, and the section can be cut square instead of oblong. The dichroic colour can be chosen to lean towards blues and violets or towards ambers and greens, and two or three can be made at different heights to stand as a group. Two people carry it upright, one at each end of the lower body with hands under its broad faces, and nobody takes hold of the sloping cap or its high corner.
